Teacher Leader Project Overview: I teach 7th grade at a middle school. Students attend PE every day, but often have trouble focusing in class. Additionally, the traditional model of teaching at the secondary level centers around teacher-led instruction, rather than student led. I think increased engagement, especially in the form of movement and discussion will help to decrease classroom behavior issues, in addition to helping students learn more effectively.
At the middle school, I plan to work specifically with my grade-level PLC to increase engagement in the 7th grade, which is experiencing the highest rate of behavior issues. I am also going to lead an “un-conference” session at our next Professional Development non-student day. The un-conference is a practice administration uses on our non-student days. Teachers create their own sessions they would like to lead and others join based on interest and need. Sessions are about an hour long. I plan to use the data collected from the 7th grade to guide my session with interested teachers. I met with my grade level PLC on Friday 3/1 and will present to the rest of the teachers at our next un-conference day on 4/19. Although I teach at the middle school, I would like to expand my work to our elementary school. I have already worked with the 4th grade teacher, who is the site instructional leader. I will meet with her on Tuesdays to incorporate structures at the elementary level. |
